我在美国换了三次驾照,两次是因为居住地变动,一次因为原有驾照到期。一次在加州,两次在新泽西。
具体流程非常简单,详细如下:
——网上查询居住地的DMV地址和开放时间,DMV是政府低效率工作的一大展示窗口,所以去办事建议选择每天最早的时间,否则就会要面临漫长的排队时间。
——如果有表格可以从DMV网站下载,那么可以打印出来事先填好,这样又可以减少现场排队的痛苦
——如果仅仅是驾照过期,其他信息不变,那么恭喜,这是最简单的情况。只要带上护照,社保号码卡,地址证明(我用了手机话费账单),I797,I94,再加上已经过期的老驾照,到场填一张表即可。我最近一次的renew,DMV没有看I797,仅仅索取了I94检查。现在的I94,需要自己上国土安全部网站,输入自己信息后打印出来(https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/consent.html),因为上面标有和I797一致的在美国可逗留的最后期限,所以我猜对DMV来说两者类似,但有I797没有I94就去办理业务恐怕行不通。
——如果因为居住的州不同而更换驾照,过程会因为不同的州而有变化,但基本等于在新的住地申请一张新驾照,需要填的表格更多更详细,只是和第一次申请驾照相比,免去了路考。比如我搬去加州旧金山时,是需要考过加州的驾照笔试的并且重新测视力的,而去新泽西时,并没有要求笔试和视力测试。
——和过去相比,DMV现在当场可以打印出新的驾照,不需要像以前那样,办完手续拿上一张纸质临时驾照,回家等几周才能拿到新驾照。
——一切顺利的话,半小时到一小时就可以完成以上的步骤

A world without work

其中一段里面写到硬件的回归我觉得很有意思,摘录如下:
Alex Bandar, who started the foundry after receiving a doctorate in meaterials science and engineering, has a terory about the rhythms of invention in American history. Over the past century, he told me, the economy has moved from hardware to software, from atoms to bits, and people have spent more time at work in front of screens But as computers take over more tasks previously considered the province of humans, the pendulum will swing back from bits to atoms, at least when it comes to how people spend their days. Bandar thinks that a digitally preoccupied society will come to appreciate the pure and distinct pleasure of making things you can touch. "I've always wanted to usher in a new era of technology where robots do our bidding," Bandar said. "If you have better batteries, better robotics, more dexterous manpulation, then it's not a far stretch to say robots do most of the work. So what do we do? Play? Draw? Actually talk to each other again?"
我最近几个月一直在看和智能硬件相关的话题(事实我工作的本质整合硬件产业链信息,从中提炼具有投资价值的想法),我觉得未来的硬件研发过程会向软件靠拢,迭代速度更快,试错成本更低,从原型到市场的时间也会变得很短。这种趋势的背后有两大推进动力,一是国内(特别是珠三角)的产业链集群效应,二是开源项目是的核心算法变得更加简单易得,也就是说,最基础最花血汗的工作已经有人为开发者打下了基础。另外相对次要,但对市场不可或缺的推进力,在于智能手机的普及,这其实是非常强大的基础建设,今天的硬件开发者可以假设,他的每一个潜在消费者都会随身携带一个计算功能强大,具备无线网络连接和触摸显示屏的电脑。
